All the Space You Need

The Emsworth U3A Environment & Technology Group visited Astrium, the Portsmouth based space business which is world No 2 in satellite technology.

After an inspiring talk about Portsmouth's place in satellite construction, launching and maintenance, we toured the immaculate site to see communications satellite components being constructed, and then assembled on the satellites, in ultra clean conditions.

We had to agree with our guide James Hinds , one of Portsmouth's best kept
secrets.

Virtual U3A

The Virtual U3A (vU3A), is an online-only U3A, affiliated to the Third Age Trust.

One of its principal aims is to provide the U3A experience for those who are isolated in some way by circumstances,  or geography, and unable to play a full part in an ordinary U3A.

More information is available on the vU3A website at www.vu3a.org

Why not pay it a visit? And if you know of anyone who might benefit, please pass this information on.

Observatory Visit

Members of the Environment and Technology Group visited the headquarters of the Hampshire Astronomical Group at its Clanfield Observatory on Thurs 16th Dec.

Such a blizzard swept the hilltop on our arrival that Ernest Shakelton himself might have greeted us at the observatory workshop.

We admired the 24" reflecting telescope and its mechanism in its unheated dome until our feet froze solid and then back in the lecture room enjoyed a guided tour round the Universe and the Solar System led by David Harris.
A memorable and worthwhile visit.
